Hammertoes and claw toes are formed when the muscle bellies of the tendons (remember tendons are the ends of the muscles that fasten to the bones) that attach into the four smaller toes, contract for a sustained period of time. Some of the muscles on the front and back side of your lower leg are literally having a tug-of-war with your toes. The same scenario, known as trigger toe, can play out with the big toe.
